On Location in Malibu 2021:
Paintings by the California Art Club

Exhibition

Presented by the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University, this exhibition consisted of some 80 paintings of Malibu created by over 50 artist-members of the California Art Club, the oldest continually operating art association in California. Many of the paintings were produced over the past year especially for this exhibition.

Inspired by the beauty and scenic diversity of Malibu, this exhibition is the eighth in a triennial series organized since 1999 by the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art.

Impressionism and plein air painting were dominant styles in California art in the early 1900s. This exhibition celebrates the continued vitality of this tradition by showcasing new paintings of Malibu, created by current members of the California Art Club.

All art from the On Location in Malibu exhibition can currently be viewed online.

On Location in Malibu 2015:
Paintings by the California Art Club

Exhibition

Presented by the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University, this exhibition consisted of more than 60 paintings of Malibu created by over 30 artist-members of the California Art Club, the oldest continually operating art association in California. Many of the paintings were produced over the past year especially for this exhibition.

In the year leading up to the exhibition, artist-members of the California Art Club visited Malibu to document how the diverse scenery has changed over the years. Their works — many painted on location — reveal that this oceanside paradise is a complex place with many moods and identities.

The majority of the paintings were done in the spirit of “plein-air.” This French term refers to landscape paintings executed outdoors. By working on the spot and directly in front of the subject, artists can respond to nuances of light and setting that are lost in photographs. Plein-air paintings display a depth of perception and a poetry of subjective interpretation that give these works their broad appeal.

The practice of painting en plein air was revived in the late 20th century by a new generation of artists who have returned to realist aesthetics and traditional art methods to engage a new audience in art discourse.

The paintings in On Location in Malibu capture Malibu’s startling variety of picturesque scenery, from idyllic beaches to craggy canyons and mountains. Although the technique of plein-air painting is over 100 years old, the art in this exhibition reveals that the style remains flexible and resilient. Each artist has their own stylistic approach, creating works that seem fresh, new, vital, and personal.

“Malibu Winter Sunset” Painting Chosen for Cover
of California Art Club Publication

Article by Molly Siple

From the Feb. 2011 Gold Medal Award Edition of the CAC Newsletter:

“The eye-catching painting on the cover of the California Art Club’s…centennial book, California Light: A Century of Landscapes (Paintings of the California Art Club), by Jean Stern and Molly Siple, is a dreamy quintessential southern California scene by artist Cathey Cadieux. When Cadieux found out that her painting had been given this honor, she was absolutely thrilled, beside herself with amazement, and even a bit in shock. She humbly asked, ‘How did this happen?!’ Here’s how.” [more...]
